📝 Topic & Abstract

Reflecting on Climate Hazard Response: Why Integrating Geospatial and Social Science Matters

As climate-related hazards increase in frequency and impact, effective response strategies must extend beyond physical risk assessment to encompass the social dimensions of vulnerability, resilience, and community action. In this session, the speaker will present interdisciplinary research titled "Humanitarianism and Volunteerism in Disaster Response: The Case of Sikh Volunteers," conducted as a case study of the 2022 Australian floods (Baniya & Pokharel, 2024).

This research emphasises the need for interventions that integrate both spatial and social sciences to create effective and inclusive disaster responses. The study combines spatial flood analysis with qualitative insights from interviews to examine how Sikh Volunteers Australia mobilised rapidly to support affected communities. The research highlights how community-led efforts, volunteer networks, and informal infrastructures often fill critical gaps left by formal emergency systems, especially for marginalised groups.
